Many a rider arriving in sleepy Kaslo has continued on
either west to New Denver or south to Balfour, unaware that Kaslo is the hub
for not two, but three excellent biking roads. In fact, one of the
best roads in the area proceeds north as a continuation of Hwy 31. Winding
its way between the steep sides of the Goat Mountain Range and the northwest
shore of Kootenay Lake, this least known of the fabulous Kootenay roads
probably owes its anonymity to the fact that it appears as gravel on many
maps. In fact, this road doesn’t gravel out until Meadow Creek, 40.8 km
(25.7 mi) in. Not only that, the first third has what is without doubt the
smoothest, best engineered blacktop in the area. There’s even a pub at the
end to ease the pain of turning back. Interested? You should be. This
combination of twistiness, quality pavement and top notch scenery is not to
be missed.
