It's surprising to find a road with virtually no
development this close to a sprawling, growth-crazed city like Nanaimo,
especially when it’s about three minutes from downtown. The moderately
curving first half of this DH is a north-south jaunt through cool, deep
forest where less than ideal sightlines dictate a relaxed pace. The second
part, made up of consistent, predictable sweepers running east-west along
the unseen Nanaimo River, is better paved, less enclosed by trees and
suitable for higher speed roadwork. While there is nothing particularly
remarkable about any aspect of this road, it provides a curvy, lightly
travelled alternative to the boring 10.0 km (6.2 mi) on Hwy 1/19 south of
Nanaimo. And maybe that's remarkable enough.
