The wretched Trans-Canada (Hwy 1) drone through the
Fraser Valley from Vancouver to Hope is a true test of your soul. Perhaps
that’s why it’s home to B.C.’s Bible Belt. But north of Hope, where
the Fraser Canyon begins, there is one heavenly section which can’t
be converted to a straight path by even the most devout Minister of
Highways. The terrain beyond Yale is so steep and rough in some places there
was no option but to blast tunnels through long sections of solid rock to
force a road through. And what a road it is. Smooth, wide pavement
complements the sweeping, perfectly engineered curves. And the scale of the
surrounding scenery at times defies description. If you get lucky and hit a
lull in the often-heavy traffic and don’t mind flirting with the
omnipresent speed tax collectors, this road can be truly divine.
