F.M. Rattenbury, the famous architect who built the
provincial legislature, also
constructed Nelson’s Beaux Arts style bank and
Chateau-style courthouse before a sex scandal forced him to flee the
province in 1930. If old F.M. was trying to blow town in a hurry, this
probably would have been his route of choice. Smoothly designed, this DH is
as civilized as the funky, sophisticated city from which it runs. Rattenbury
wouldn’t have cared much for the average scenery. But the light traffic
count, excellent pavement and perfectly manicured, no-surprise curves would
have given him a fast and easy escape. And once he came down from the low
pass and hit the high-speed straightaways at the southern end, he’d have
been pretty much home free. Times change, and your Ducati 996 provides a
different reason to head south in a hurry. But don’t push the tolerance of
the Kootenay’s speed tax collectors too far or you may be getting a close
look at Nelson’s Rattenbury courthouse. From the inside.
