No huge dividends in S-curves. No blue-chip asphalt. No
chart-topping vistas. This unassuming highway earns its DH listing the
old-fashioned way, by sticking to the fundamentals: a respectable number of
single curves, sound pavement, balanced scenery and not too much
development. Running through a high valley, the road starts among the farms
and fields surrounding the quiet settlement of Westwold before moving into
the mature pine forests of the surrounding hills. Scenic highlights include
a view over Monte Lake and a mountain panorama when the road drops down to
the South Thompson River and meets the Trans-Canada (Hwy 1). Even though it’s
a major artery, this section of Hwy 97 should be included in your DH
portfolio. It’s worth the investment.
