Early explorers tried unsuccessfully to extract salt from
the briny springs for which this island is named. They were on the wrong
track. Salt Spring’s full of pure sweetness, at least when it comes to
motorcycling. And the island’s northern circuit has a intriguing flavour
all its own. Cruising through the colourful arbutus stands up the island’s
west side, looping down through its pine forested mid-section, and twisting
along the shore of St. Mary Lake, this DH captures many faces of this
peaceful Gulf Island. You might even see some of Salt Spring’s famous
lamb, grazing unsuspectingly in the rolling meadows. The only sour thing
about this loop is that some of the pavement is a little rough in the upper
reaches. Even then, the sweet curves you discover on this expedition are
worth exploring.
