From its southern start in the cool, sheer canyon of the
Goldstream River, the legendary Malahat Drive climbs the steep west side of
the scenic Saanich Inlet. The vertical slopes of Vancouver Island’s only
eastern inlet were once a formidable barrier to early land travel between
Victoria and the northern island. But no more. High above the water, this
easy, smoothly paved ride boasts three panoramic viewpoints. And even if you
don’t normally gear down to gaze at scenery, you might want to check these
out, especially the third one. It offers one of the most spectacular views
on Vancouver Island. With the revisionists at the Ministry of Highways
constantly upgrading this heavily used road, almost all its historic
twistiness has been eliminated anyhow. So you may as well ease up, kick back
and enjoy the view.
Riders Reviews:
"This road is only good for the views. The only fun on a
motorcycle is if you are going
very fast. Problem is that this is a grade-A choice, prime speed enforcement
zone (laser radar usually and radar vans on occasion). Views, good. Fun, not
really (teeth clenched exercising throttle restraint)."
